PYGINAL is a phytotherapeutic
product extracted from the bark of “Pygeum Africanum
Hooker”, a tree found in South and Central Africa.
The extract has been used since ancient times for the treatment
of bladder pains and micturation problems. The validity
of the treatment has been confirmed and the extract has
entered successfully in the basic therapy of Benign Prostatic
Hypertrophy.
Composition
Each soft gelatin capsule contains:
Pygeum africanum soft extract
50 mg.
Excipients qs.
Pharmacology
Pyginal is a natural association of substances
like Phytosterols, Pentacyclic tritepenes and Ferulic acid
Esters of fatty alcohols, with synergistic pharmacological
effects on prostrate. These constituents are endowed with
anti-inflammatory, antiedema and cholesterol lowering action
on prostate.
Pyginal relieves functional symptoms such as frequency,
dysuria, nocturia, diurnal and nocturnal pollakiuria, perineal
heaviness and incomplete bladder emptying which are symptoms
associated with Benign Prostatic Hypertrophy. The drug also
brings about improvement in uroflowmetry parameters.
In an Indian study in patients of Benign Prostatic Hypertrophy,
Pyginal (50mg. BID for 3 months) decreased Mean Boyarsky
Symptom Score by 35.17%, Mean Voiding Time by 24.9%, Mean
flow time by 26.89%, Mean Time to Maximum Flow by 41.68%
and Mean Post-Void Residue by 60.1%. Pyginal improved Mean
Voided Volume by 27.24%, Mean Maximum Flow Rate by 25.7%,
Mean Average Flow Rate by 25.8% and Mean Pre-Void Capacity
by 10.39%. Pyginal regresses the size of the prostate in
patients with mild to moderate enlargement of the gland.
Pyginal did not adversely affect any hematological or biochemical
parameter or cause any side effects and is a good treatment
option for BPH patients contributing to improved quality
of life
Indications
Benign Prostatic Hypertrophy
Contraindication
No contraindications are known.
Dosage
Recommended dosage of Pyginal 50mg. twice daily after meals
for a period of 6 months. Pyginal will show its effects
after consumption for minimum period of one month being
a long term therapy. However, Pyginal can be pre-prescribed
with alpha-blockers for immediate symptomatic relief. Pyginal
is safely tolerated in dose range of 100-200 mg per day
in divided doses as quoted in several studies. The course
can be repeated depending upon judgement of treating Physician.
Pyginal can be used for at least 5 years or more without
any side effects.
Precaution
DO NOT TAKE ON EMPTY STOMACH
Side Effects
Pyginal is well tolerated even after long term administration.
In rare cases transient gastrointestinal disturbances may
occur.
